Excellence with CO₂ emissions offset

Our coffee capsules would not be aligned with our values without consideration for the environment and carbon footprint. This is why Lavazza has reduced emissions along our entire value chain and offsets direct emissions for our capsules.

Excellence with CO₂ emissions offset

Now all Lavazza Blue Capsules feature CO₂ emissions offset. Enjoy the Lavazza coffee experience, with the decadent aromas and flavors of our blends, with confidence that CO₂ emissions are offset.

The new Lavazza CO₂ emission offset Capsules

Our carbon neutrality approach starts by reducing emissions along Lavazza's entire value chain. In 2020 we began our journey by offsetting direct emissions and achieving complete CO₂ emissions compensation.

This is part of our bigger commitment toward sustainability named Blend for Better. It embraces many projects following the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations for 2030 in 4 key areas: Care for the environment, Spin a virtuous cycle, Open up opportunities and Educate for change.

What does it concretely mean?

Our carbon neutrality approach starts by reducing emissions. As we are conscious that all emissions cannot be reduced at once, Lavazza uses carbon offsetting on the residual emissions by supporting different projects. We offset our annual carbon emissions in relation to the volumes of Lavazza Blue capsules sold.

Product Life Cycle

The activities put in place to compensate the CO₂ emissions of Lavazza Blue capsules cover the whole life cycle of the product, from the cultivation of coffee to the end of its life - through all stages of production, transport and disposal.

1. Coffee supply

1. Coffee supply

We offset all the emissions related to the amount of coffee produced and processed at every stage of the supply chain.

2. Packaging

2. Packaging

We offset the emissions related to all phases of packaging manufacturing.

3. Production

3. Production

We offset all the emissions related to the production processes through which green coffee is transformed into capsules.

4. Distribution

4. Distribution

We offset the emissions linked to the distribution of the final product traveling from the production plant to the distribution centers.

5. Consumption

5. Consumption

We offset the emission related to the consumption of the final product ( e.g. energy of the coffee machines).

6. End of life

6. End of life

We offset the emission related to all the steps through which the final product is disposed (e.g. packaging and coffee disposal according to each country’s specific regulatory and operative framework).

CO₂ Neutrality, we’re on the way

Lavazza is one of the top players in agri-food industry in the world. That’s why producing our best quality coffee is just a part of our mission, how we do it is just as important.

Our commitment is to make our best effort to use sustainable resources, ensure fair work lives for coffee cultivators and, of course, reduce CO₂ emissions in our supply chain.

HOW WE WORK

For us, Sustainability is a shared responsibility based on continuous evolution

Lavazza

Believes that a healthy environment is a universal right and a shared responsibility

Works to create change for the better across the entire supply chain

Invests in innovation to leave a better world for future generations

Loves the Earth and fights passionately to improve its future

Dedicates itself every day to reducing climate impact and to promoting a circular economy

Climate protection
+

Climate protection

Many human activities contribute to increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which in turn contributes to global climate change. The effects of this can be felt on coffee plantations too, causing a loss of biodiversity and a drop in productivity and quality, with negative consequences for the living conditions of the growers.

The aim of the Lavazza is to contribute to the fight against climate change, reducing the carbon emissions generated throughout the group’s entire value chain by 2030.

Environmental sustainability at source
+

Environmental sustainability at source

Over 125 years of experience in the field have taught Lavazza to focus its initiatives at the source of the coffee, places where it knows it can make a significant and long-term impact by engaging with and supporting coffee-producing communities.

Through the Lavazza Foundation, Lavazza plays an active role in sustainable development projects, which help coffee-growers to adopt the most suitable agricultural techniques to effectively respond to the impacts of climate change and promote good practices for the preservation of areas with a high natural value.

Sustainable by design
+

Sustainable by design

The aim of the Lavazza is to guarantee maximum coffee quality with the minimum possible environmental impact. This falls within the activities of Research and Development, thanks to experimentation with and implementation of the most innovative techniques from the very earliest stages of designing packaging, coffee machines and production models.

Moreover, the pursuit of sustainability by design follows the principles of the circular economy to prevent waste and reduce environmental impact, increasing efficiency and reducing emissions and the production of waste throughout the product’s entire life cycle. Drawing inspiration from nature, the “design for circularity” approach adopted by Lavazza sets itself the aim of optimizing the use of resources, favoring renewable and recycled ones, and extracting value from products at the end of their life through reuse, recycling and composting.

Responsible use of resources
+

Responsible use of resources

A supply chain as complex and far-ranging as that of coffee requires a detailed strategy aimed at reducing its impact on the environment, including through the responsible use of natural resources, from production to consumption. For this reason, Lavazza adopts protocols for the purpose of achieving maximum energy efficiency and the sustainable management of water and waste.
