The drive

Toni Nadal and Carlos Moyà tell us all about the drive, the basic shot in tennis alongside the backhand, the service and volleys. Chatting with a coffee in hand, they explain, without excessive use of technical terms, the foundations of this deceptively simple shot, one which requires balance. Carlos explains, “You must shift the momentum from behind you, paying close attention to balancing both your body as well as the racket.”

The handle also plays a role which should not be underestimated. It has changed radically, over the years. “Initially, it was more classic, now it has transformed in such a way as to allow the racket to point lower,” Tony reminds us.

Finally, the stances, from closed (which requires the feet to be perpendicular to the base line), to the open stand, preferred by Carlos, but difficult to execute, “Because it requires greater technique.”

The informal and relaxed atmosphere that flows between Toni and Carlos reminds us that, more than just a sporting discipline, tennis is a passion for them both: a ritual to celebrate and a pleasure to share, just like a good coffee.
